Local Dental Office Marks Annual Event With Record Local Contribution

At her fourth annual "Candy Buy Back" Day, Dr. Laura Aversano asked local residents to bring their leftover Halloween candy into her office for a good cause. In addition to paying each resident $1 per pound for their contribution, she then donates all of the candy (along with toothbrushes, toothpaste, and dental floss) to Operation Care Package. This year, her friends and patients came out in record numbers.

Mention a dentist and candy in the same sentence and normally one thinks of a cavity. But in the case of Manhattan Dental Care, it represents an annual donation and recognition of U.S. military personnel serving overseas.

At her fourth annual "Candy Buy Back" Day, Dr. Laura Aversano asked local residents to bring their leftover Halloween candy into her office for a good cause. In addition to paying each resident $1 per pound for their contribution (as well as entry in a gift card drawing), Dr. Aversano then donates all of the candy (along with toothbrushes, toothpaste, and dental floss) to Operation Care Package. This year, her friends and patients came out in record numbers.

"Last year we reached 196 pounds of candy, but this year we received 588 pounds," she said. "It's very heart-warming to see all of the community--children, parents, patients, and friends--come here with all of the candy and smiles on their faces."

Dr. Aversano says two of the largest candy donations came from an eighth grade class project at a Frankfort school and from a local Girl Scouts troop.

This year's donations to servicemembers couldn't come at a better time, according to Debbie Smothers of Operation Care Package in Joliet. "We have been getting so many requests, especially for hygiene materials," she says. "Part of the reason has been the closing down of many of the PXs (U.S. Army-based retail stores) overseas, so this type of donation is really needed."

Smothers says that most of the donation goes to troops in Afghanistan, in Kozovo, Iraq, and some deployed ships overseas. "Dr. Aversano has been great to work with; not just with this annual event, but also during the course of the year, with everything she donates to our group. We are so pleased to work with her and happy for her successful event this year."

Being a part of the community, and giving back to the community is big part of Manhattan Dental Care's business philosophy, according to Dr. Aversano. "This has become an event where everyone walks away a winner. People feel good about giving their candy for a great cause. We are happy to bring our community together, and hopefully our troops are happy to get our packages." she adds.
